The boy who cried, "Wolf!"

ONCE there was a shepherd boy (çoban çocuk) who was very bored (canı sıkkın). Watching sheep (koyun) is boring. You sit and do nothing.
To have some fun, the shepherd boy began to shout (
bağırmak), “Wolf! Wolf! The Wolf is coming to eat the sheep!”
The people who lived in the village (
köy) came running up the hill to help the boy chase (kovalamak) the wolf away. But when they came to the top of the hill, there was no wolf.
     The boy laughed (
güldü) when he saw everyone run up the hill.
     “Don’t cry (
bağırmak) Wolf !” said the villagers, “when there is no wolf!” Then they went back down the hill.
Later, the boy shouted again, “Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is coming to eat the sheep!”  He laughed even more as he saw the villagers run up the hill to help him.
When the villagers saw no wolf they were very angry (
çok kızgın)!  They said, “Don’t cry Wolf when there is NO wolf!” But the boy laughed and watched them walk away.
     Later (
sonra), he saw a REAL WOLF walking near his sheep. The shepherd boy was very afraid (çok korkmuş)!  He shouted as loudly (yüksek sesle) as he could, “WOLF! WOLF!”
But the villagers thought he was playing a game again and so they did not come to help him.
     At sunset (
gün batımı), everyone wondered (merak) why the shepherd boy did not come back to the village with their sheep. They went up the hill to find the boy. They found him crying (ağlamak).
“There really WAS a wolf! He ran after the sheep and ate one!  I shouted, 'WOLF!' Why didn’t you come?”
An old man answered, “No one believes a liar (
yalancı) even when he is telling the truth!”
